In an intense encounter at HPCA Stadium in Dharamshala, Prabhsimran Singh hogged the limelight with the bat to give Punjab Kings (PBKS) a 37-run win over the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the ongoing IPL 2025. The right-hand batsman exploded with a scintillating knock of 91 off 48 balls, while Arshdeep Singh kept picking wickets at the top as PBKS claimed second spot on the points table. This was Punjab’s first win in Dharamshala since 2023, and it is another nail in the coffin for Punjab, according to Anil Kumble, thereby announcing Punjab as one of the top contenders for the title this year.
PBKS turned the tide in their favor from the very beginning. Early wickets fell, and the aggressive powerplay batting merged with relentless momentum from the middle order to set the tone. On the flip side, LSG’s top-order collapsed right from an early period of the top order collapsing under Arshdeep’s fiery spell. Both sides were effectively winning and losing from the sixth over in both innings, with PBKS holding sway through strategy and execution.
PBKS Powerplay Score: 66/2 [RR: 11.00, 4s/6s: 4/6]
KINGS started off aggressively, with Priyansh Arya falling in the very third over to the suspiciously good return of Akash Singh. Inglis slotted in at number 3, hitting Akash for a boundary before three huge sixes off Mayank Yadav. Prabhsimran Singh, untarnished by the early wickets, took Mayank’s pace and inconsistency and gained two sixes and a four in a rapid sequence.
The left-hander’s quick cameo meant that Prabhsimran Singh, who never spared Nicholas Pooran from dropping a catch, continued his rampant battering with increasing confidence. His measured aggression ensured that the opening blows were not going to hamper PBKS’ intent to attack. Mayank Yadav struggled with his line and length; batters made the most of it through brilliant placement and sheer power.
PBKS Middle Overs: 95/1 [RR: 10.55, 4s/6s: 8/5]
With the field spread out, Prabhsimran kept his aggression but was sensible in his strike rotation, punishing loose deliveries while the pair took the PBKS total past 100 runs in the 10th over. Prabhsimran completed his half-century in a mere 30 balls, an excellent equilibrium of timing and calmness.
Shreyas Iyer’s classy strokeplay kept up the pressure on LSG, hitting a six and a four off Prince Yadav’s bowling. Even though he departed after scoring 45, the innings guaranteed that the run rate would stay high. The fresh arrival Nehal Wadhera kept up the momentum with a classy pick-up six.
Prince Yadav and Digvesh Rathi came under fire during this phase as boundaries flowed freely. Rathi’s third over resulted in his most expensive, with Prabhsimran clearing the fence twice while Wadhera laid back and found a boundary with ease.
PBKS Death Overs: 75/2 [RR: 15.00, 4s/6s: 6/5]
Wadhera was bowled round his legs by Prince, but the unstoppable PBKS juggernaut kept on moving. Prabhsimran smashed Prince for a gigantic six, while Mayank Yadav was almost dismantled as PBKS moved to 212 by 18 overs.
Shashank Singh joined in on the fun, sending down two fours and a six in the 18th over. There was a 50-run stand between the two in just 16 balls. After an exhilarating 91, Prabhsimran fell to a switch hit off Rathi, having first laid the foundations for PBKS to amass a daunting 236/5-the highest ever total at Dharamshala.
The LSG fielding effort could never be sharp enough to control such a high-scoring onslaught. There were dropped catches coupled with poor field placements that conceded more runs to PBKS. By the time the innings closed, it was a state of damage done.
LSG Powerplay Score: 38/3 [RR: 6.33, 4s/6s: 2/3]
From ball one, Arshdeep Singh almost caught fire. He took two wickets in his second over, Mitchell Marsh and Markram falling in quick succession. Pooran fell to Arshdeep shortly thereafter, trapped LBW, putting LSG into dire straits at 38/3 at the end of the powerplay.
Ayush Badoni and Rishabh Pant tried to fight from there on, but the pressure was just immense. Pant took Jansen for a six, but he soon went for another big shot and was gone. The disciplined bowling from PBKS ensured that the required run rate kept climbing.
LSG Middle Overs: 105/2 [RR: 11.66, 4s/6s: 8/5]
With the five top-order batsmen back inside, the pair launched a counterattack Ayush Badoni’s 22-ball half-century was one of innovation and power. Abdul Samad also dispatched some sixes off Yuzvendra Chahal and Vyshak Vijaykumar.
Though the duo kept LSG fighting for a while, the pressure of the climb weighed down on the chase as it reached somewhere in the region of 18 by the 14th over. So they were in for a grueling hike. Despite several sixes, no more boundaries fell in the 15th and 16th overs.
The bowlers of PBKS stuck to their lines and lengths. Run wide outside off and with variation of pace. This strategically placed variation never allowed batsmen to settle in any rhythm.
LSG Death Overs: 56/2 [RR: 11.20, 4s/6s: 4/4]
Arshdeep returned and bowled a beautiful 16th over for just 6 runs. Samad departed after scoring 45 in what was a caught-and-bowled by Jansen. Badoni registered a fine 74 before Chahal took his wicket in the last over.
Sixty-one wins to hit off the final two overs proved a Herculean task. Avesh Khan plundered a four and six in the last over, but LSG could manage just 199/7 in the 20 overs.
With this win Punjab Kings leap to the No. 2 position on the IPL 2025 points table. With the momentum in their favour, the Kings look well set for a deep playoff run. Prabhsimran’s good form is a big positive, while Arshdeep’s bowling is also very solid.
PBKS have three days off now with their next game coming up against Delhi Capitals at Dharamshala on May 8. Meanwhile, Lucknow Super Giants will look for a reset as they return home for the next clash against Royal Challengers Bengaluru on May 9.
